Making a Wood Barrel Fabulous with Old World Paint and a Secret Bling Weapon

When my lovely neighbour Darlene gave this half-barrel to me, I'm pretty sure I didn't hear what she said about it because my mind was already whirring with the possibilities...

Shall I Hemp Oil it? Add some fabulous stencils? Do I keep it? It would be great to use for off-season boots by the back door? Or maybe by the front door with my shopping bags? I can store potatoes and onions in it. Or what about using it for recycling?

I know you all understand this feeling. New beginnings! All the possibilities! How do you decide?

An Estate Sale Table Makeover with Milk Paint & Metallic Made for a Coffee Lover

It was an eye-spy-with-my-little-eye moment.

There I was. At an estate sale.
Not an ordinary estate sale.
A super-fancy-wear-something-without-paint estate sale.

Everything was completely out of my price range.
Until I saw this.
$30 done and dusted!

In retrospect if I'd seen this sweet girl at an op shop
I might've thought $30 was a bit steep.

When in Rome...

Here's how she came up.
Now she could strut right back into that
estate sale with pride if she wanted!

We love playing with paint and we thought it would be fun to create a space to play, experiment, test new colours and just have fun!

Here's how it all started...

We admit to being door-obsessed.

These vintage beauties were ready-and-waiting to be painted in diverse shades of Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint before being used to line the walls behind the DIY Paint Bar.

When most people go on holiday, they lie on a beach, explore nature, read, relax — that kinda thing, right?

Apparently, I do bedroom makeovers!

My sister is a giver and always helping others. She wasn't well for a few years, so when I visited her recently of course a full DIY bedroom reno was in order!

By the way, my sister was going to TOSS this set and buy a new one?!

Even my nieces didn't have faith in me, but I begged them to be patient. They both eyed me suspiciously...

I popped into an op shop, had a look around, there was nothing much, on my way out I see this little sweetie with all those curves — and a $6.99 price tag.

A Valentine's Day Whitewashed Vintage Painted Dresser Restyle

The Before's...

The top was sanded back to whitewash with Chalk Paint.
When using Chalk Paint as a wash, add water and stir
to your preferred colour and consistency.

In sanding, my goal wasn't uniformity in the finish,
there is beauty in the depth and variation in timber
and I wanted this in the finished product.

Here's how it went:

It was a fairly straight forward upcycle.

One coat of paint was all that was needed for this project and once it dried,
I used the Miss Mustard Seed Wax Puck
to rub randomly across the edges and areas of the dresser
that would naturally get wear with time.
This puck acts as a resist and gives a gorgeous layered look for the next
coat of paint.

The end result, looking pretty stylish

An elegant contrast of whitewashed top and distressed base

This may be my favourite furniture refinish in a long time.
This vintage dresser has plenty of attitude while being very style and colour neutral.
You can drop this piece into a vintage home, modern home, coastal, eclectic,
even a traditional or historic home and it
will find its way with its subtle style.

Using any light colour paint to whitewash the top

I played with the top to get the look I wanted,
wiping it with a rag, adding water, changing brushes...
I think that's part of the fun and what contributes to a stunning one-of-a-kind result.
Don't ever forget to play and have fun.
