How to Make a Chalkboard Sign Out of a Door with Fusion Mineral Paint!

I mean, what else do you do with an amazingly solid
too-heavy-to-lift door with a brass peephole and mail slot?

You make a copper chalkboard
with uber-cool Fusion Metallic Paint!

After: Chalkboard door with Fusion Mineral Paint
As most of you know by now, I prefer quirky over the expected.
Every. Time.

Who needs traditional farmhouse perfection
when I can have this awesomeness?!

How easy is it to do?
Seriously quick, simple and fun.
Check it out:

While deciding what colour chalkboard to paint,
I painted a "base coat" of Fusion Mineral Paint in
Liberty Blue to cut back the white
of the door on the chalkboard sections.

Although Coal Black is stunning with
copper, I wanted something unusual.

Experimenting with alternate colours for chalkboards
is something I love doing.
At every one of our Workshops our
chalkboard welcome signs change to a different colour paint!

Here's a chalkboard created with Liberty Blue — it gives
a softer finish than Coal Black.

Of course a traditional Coal Black chalkboard is always a winner.

After deciding Fusion Metallic Paint in Copper
was happening for the frame, I "undercoated" it with
a similar colour to improve coverage.
This step gives a better finish to metallic paints.

I used leftover Fusion colours Coral and Tuscan Orange,
for a quick, rough coat to cut the white.
Nothing pretty to see here . . .
but it did show me these colours would look
fabulous together on a Mediterranean-look project!

I have a market coming up where I'm
featuring greens so I wanted to
create a vintage green chalkboard.

Miss Mustard Seed recently created something
similar in Milk Paint that I used as inspiration
 using Fusion Mineral Paint.

I poured a bit of Liberty Blue into Park Bench and
stirred with my mini-whisk
until I achieved the colour I wanted.

Sorry, I know, not very precise but have I
mentioned I'm too impatient to measure?

With the first sloppy coat on,
now comes the finishing second coat.

I love that almost anything can be achieved
with one to two coats of Fusion Mineral Paint!

The smaller Cling On brushes work perfectly for
cutting in and detail work.
The Cling On R12 achieves a nice,
tight line on the inside chalkboard sections.

Cling On Paint Brushes give a perfect finish every time

The Cling On Flat 30 was used to cut in
from the trim to the chalkboard with
Fusion Metallic Paint in copper.

Cling On Brushes minimise brushstrokes
and lay paint on evenly providing exceptional coverage.

A pretty delicious colour combo!

Before use, cure or season the chalkboard with chalk.
This preps the surface making it easier to write on and to clean.

Rub chalk up and down, and across
covering the entire board then wipe clean with a cloth.
I usually do this twice.

Wipe the chalk away with a clean cloth and repeat
Seasoning or curing gives the chalkboard
better "usability" and an added bonus is how
it softens the colour in this case
giving it an even more vintage feel.

This gorgeous Fusion Metallic Copper
catches the light and has amazing dimension.
And what a useful addition to any room
for notes, lists, reminders, menus.

Personalising a chalkboard sign
 to your home and style
is just a click away with our all natural paints!
