Painting a Laminate Kitchen with Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint

18/3/2015

I have this awesomely brave client in Western Australia.
She's a visionary...
Although her builders grade kitchen was lovely, she wanted more.

She wanted to put her personal stamp on it.
And she decided to do it with Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint.

Although she'd never used Milk Paint before, Mrs. S was game

to get started and we walked through it together via email, texts and a few phone calls.

New raw timber bench tops installed BEFORE Hemp Oil
The  project began with replacing the laminate countertops with
affordable raw timber bench tops from the local hardware store.
The cost? Only $69.
Nice!

Although Mrs. S originally intended to stain and varnish the bench tops,
we instead discussed the benefits of staining with Milk Paint and
using Miss Mustard Seed's Hemp Oil to seal it.
She liked that Hemp Oil is waterproof, heatproof and
most importantly, food-safe.

Once she and Mr. S tested the Hemp Oil on an inconspicuous spot,
they were sold! They scrapped the idea of staining the timber
they were so happy with the rich, beautiful finish the Hemp Oil
brought to the mid-grade timber.

The next step was painting the laminate cabinetry.
She chose Miss Mustard Seed's Artissimo, a rich, deep midnight blue
that perfectly complements the white glass splash back in this coastal home.

What's the key to getting a beautiful finish with Milk Paint??? Patience.

Here's what Mrs. S had to say about mixing the paint,
"The paint went on like a dream. The key was, as you said, mix and rest, mix and rest."

For a project like this, mixing Milk Paint to  a smooth and
even consistency is key.  Don't rush the process.
Allow the paint time.

Once mixed Bonding Agent was added to ensure bonding with the laminate
and to prevent any "chippy" from happening.
Our natural bristle Paint Brushes were used to ensure
a smooth, even application.

"All up the brushes are sooooo easy to take care of, " says Mrs. S.
"I've never been able to keep brushes before, this was a first!
Worth every penny."

Here's a bit more of what my awesome client had to say:
"The colour and paint is just beautiful.
The photos do not do this colour justice.
I abolutely looooooovvvvveee it.
Thank you for your awesome paints!"

I think Mrs. S has officially been bitten by the Miss Mustard Seed bug.
She has already ordered Curio, Grain Sack and Kitchen Scale...
I cannot wait to see what she gets up to next!

So amazed, impressed and proud, proving again that there is no going wrong with Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint
One coat of Artissimo painted, the next  day a second coat was applied.
The following day they were sealed with Hemp Oil.
What a result!

The stunning end result...a kitchen to be proud of.
And I'm so proud to have her as a client and
to have been a small part of this stunning kitchen renovation.

stunning transformation!
Do you think the hemp oil would work on a polished concrete bench top? Polished concrete is not porous.
My husband makes concrete benches and I like the thought of s more natural sealer

Hi Michelle....Wow....just when I think I've tried Hemp Oil on everything I get your question?!!! Honestly, I have no idea, but I cannot imagine why it wouldn't work. Is it possible to test it on a small sample??? In the meantime, I'm going to ask the manufacturers. My suspicion is that it would work great....it's meant to penetrate the surface to seal and protect while making waterproof and heatproof and has a food-grade rating, so it would be perfect. I'll get back to you asap Michelle!!!

Hi Michelle, The distributor thinks the same as myself. We're not really sure but it SEEMS as if it would work well. She recommends testing it. I'd love to know if you do...can you please keep me posted??

Hi Sada, Did Mrs S add the bonding agent in the second coat? I am getting streaks....still on my 2nd coat.....does that mean I could possibly be in a hurry!!!! & not letting it rest....
Also interested to hear how much paint mix Mrs S prepared each go of painting!!! 1 cup ratio per prep??

She said her ratio was pretty much 1:1:1 and that she filled her kitchen blender. She estimates it was about 1 cup of water/BA/Milk Paint and that was more than enough for 2 coats on her kitchen. So yes, there was BA in both coats.

The two primary reasons for streaks are not using a quality purpose-designed natural bristle brush. And yes, the second is not letting it rest.
Let me know if you have more questions!!! xxSada

Here's how Mrs. S responded:

I used the ratio 1:1:1 - paint, water, bonding agent, it filled my blender to the top, blitzed, rested, blitzed, rested, several times. I know for the whole kitchen I didn't use more than one 1 qt bag in that blender, and there was more than enough paint in that blender there for two coats, so in effect, I used the bonding agent in both coats, I basically only mixed up one blender full, which covered both coats, plus left over.
Hope that helps.

Hi Sara. We are in the research phase of preparing to paint our Laminex kitchen cupboards. As we have a heap of things to paint besides the cabinets, hubby is buying a spray painter thingo (technical term) and I was wondering if the Milk paint used in Mrs S's kitchen would be suitable for use in a spray gun? I've never worked with Milk or Chalk paints and am seriously keen to know.
Kind regards Jo.
